Altham was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.

The Burnley Express reported, BURNLEY OFFICER'S FINE EXAMPLE. Lieutenant Altham, Lancashire Fusiliers (Special Reserve), has been awarded the Military Cross.The official notification published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack. He led his platoon into enemy trenches and continued to encourage and direct his men, although severely wounded. He set a splendid example to all ranks by his cheerfulness and courage." Lieutenant Altham is the eldest son of Mr. Peter H. Altham, of Reedley Hall. On the occasion referred to he received a severe gun shot wound to the thigh, and had to under go a operation and hospital treatment. An old Mill Hill School pupil, he joined the Publi School's Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers in the early stages of the war. Subsequently he was recommended for a commission and was gazetted in May 1915. He was formerly in business with his father as a manufacturer and tea merchant.
