Baistow was a native of Nelson, Lancashire.

Baistow enlisted on the 11 August 1914 and served until disembodied on the 16 February 1919. He served in Gallipoli during August and September of 1915 and France and Belgium from the 2 December 1916 until 19 January 1919.

The Colne and Nelson Times of June 1918 reported, Honour for another Nelson Soldier. L/Corporal Frank Baistow of 28, Beaufort Street, Nelson has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for devotion to duty on the 10 November 1917 and the 21 March 1918. He was wounded in the ankles by shrapnel on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 6 August 1915, but has since recovered and rejoined his regiment. He is 30 years of age. His brother Harry is serving overseas with the Manchester Regiment.

The London Gazette of 17 June 1918 shows his Meritorious Service Medal has having been awarded whilst serving with the 2/5th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment, however his Medal Index Card (MIC) for the award records that he was serving with the 11th Company, Machine Gun Corps, this being his correct unit.
