The Burnley Express of 17 November 1917 reported, COLOUR SERGEANT’S GRANDSON, Wins Military Medal. The Military Medal has been won by Pioneer Maurice Barry, (21), 427942, Royal Engineers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Barry, 3, Springhill Road, Burnley. Formerly Pioneer Barry, served in the R.F.A. He enlisted on November 4, 1915, and went on active service in February of this year. He is now in hospital in Dundee, suffering from wounds to the head, shoulder and arm. His grandfather was Colour Sergeant Barry, who years ago was drill instructor at Grant’s School and the Grammar School. The pioneer formerly worked for Mr. Arthur Spencer, fruiterer, Raglan Road. He went to Bethel Primitive Methodist School, where is name is on the roll of honour. His day school education was received at Healey Wood under Mr. Huck. His brother, Private Harold Barry, is in the Highland Light Infantry. Corporal Walsh, writing to Mr. and Mrs. Barry, on October 28th stated, “Your son Maurice was wounded in action, on or about the 24 October. He was immediately taken to hospital, and is now in England somewhere. I do not know to what extent he was wounded, but from what I gather it was not to serious. The work he was doing at the moment he was wounded has been greatly appreciated by the officers and colonel”. Lieutenant Carr a few days later wrote, “Your son was wounded along with his signalling officer whilst attempting to repair visual communications. He is a fine boy”.
