Bird was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.
The Burnley Express of 18 October 1916 reported, SOCIETY'S CONGRATULATIONS, To Burnley Winner of Military Medal. At the last Board Meeting of the Burnley Co-operative Society, held on Monday evening, the directors, on behalf of the society, forwarded their congratulations to Corporal Fred Bird, who was employed up to the time of his enlistment as a clerk upon his success on winning the Military Medal. Corporal Bird's gallant act was as follows, 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 14 July 1916 near Contalmaison. The remainder of the battery observation party having been killed or wounded by shell fire, and himself physically affected by concussion, he continued signalling from another location, enabling a second observation station to be established'.
