Campbell's father was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.
A report in the Burnley Express of 26 January 1918 stated,
Pioneer Colin Campbell, of the Australian Forces, is a nephew of Mr. D. Campbell. His father emigrated to Australia from Burnley about 35 years ago. Pioneer Campbell went through the Dardanelles Campaign and as been two years in France. During a leave he had last Easter he paid his first visit to England, and during his stay had his one day's stay in Burnley, when his cousin, Sergeant William Hugh Campbell of the Army Service Corps also happened to be on leave, when the above photo was taken.
