The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads: - "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty since the first day of the war. By his energy, courage and example, often under most trying circumstances he assured the battalion received their rations, no matter where they were situated. At one period it was only owing to his fine determination that the ration party had passed through a very heavy barrage and successfully delivered the rations."
