The citation for his Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads: - "For conspicuous gallantry on 25 May, 1915, on the Gallipoli Peninsula, when, as a stretcher bearer, he was engaged in assisting the wounded under heavy fire. He was himself wounded whilst doing so."
