Awarded the Military Cross in the London Gazette of 3 June 1919.

Crabtree was a native of Nelson, Lancashire.

The Burnley Express reported, In the recently published Birthday Honours List appears the name of Doctor Walter Crabtree, M.B. of Barkerhouse Road, Nelson, who has been awarded the Military Cross for devotion to duty in the field. Dr. Crabtree, who whilst serving held the rank of Major, was attached to the 93rd Field Ambulance, RAMC, of which he had charge. He has had three years in France, during which time he did splendid work for the sick and wounded in the dressing stations near to the line.
