Crossley was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.
The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads: - "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of a section of a raiding party. He led his men successfully against an enemy machine-gun post, killing three of the garrison himself and assisting in capturing a machine-gun which he brought back to his lines. Against strong enemy opposition he showed marked determination and powers of leadership."
