Curl was a native of Colne, Lancashire.

The citation for his Military Cross published in the London Gazette of 26 July 1918 reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty whilst acting adjutant. He showed great ability and rendered valuable service in carrying orders to companies in the front line, in spite of heavy shell fire, and ascertained the situation. He also visited the units on the flanks, therby maintaining touch at a very critical period of the battle."
