The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This non-commissioned officer during a counter attack by the enemy maintained a heavy and continuous fire with his gun under extremely difficult conditions and very heavy shell fire, he himself being blown into the air by a shell which killed six men a few yards away. He displayed the greatest gallantry and courage".
