Dixon was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.
The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry on the 25th September 1915, near Loos. After all the officers had been killed or wounded, Sergeant Dixon assumed command of his company, and displayed great courage and example in leading his men, until he was himself severely wounded."
