The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in rallying men and leading them forward under an heavy barrage. When the enemy put down an heavy barrage and threatened a counter attack, he went out alone and met an enemy patrol, shot one and brought in several prisoners."
