1st Battalion, Border Regiment.
Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the London Gazette of 16 August 1917.
Fildes was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.
The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In the absence of an officer and all N.C.O's, he took charge of his party and led them most gallantly. Later he volunteered as a stretcher-bearer, and was of great assistance. He also went out alone under heavy fire and brought in several wounded men. He undoubtedly saved many lives by his courage and coolness."
