28885 Private A. Handford, MM.


1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Awarded the M.M., in the London Gazette of 06/08/1918. Hanford was a native of Barrowford, Lancashire.


The Colne Times of 16 August 1918 shows: -

Official notice has been received that private A. Handford Lewis-Gunner East Lancashire Regiment, who has been missing since 11 April 1918, is now reported to be a prisoner of war in Germany. He joined up in August of 1916 and went to France the following November. He was formerly a Carter for Mr. Dent, contractor of Nelson. Since being taken prisoner he has appeared on official lists has having been awarded the Military Medal.
