Handford was a native of Barrowford, Lancashire.

The Colne Times of 16 August 1918 shows, Official notice has been received that private A. Handford Lewis-Gunner East Lancashire Regiment, who has been missing since 11 April 1918, is now reported to be a prisoner of war in Germany. He joined up in August of 1916 and went to France the following November. He was formerly a Carter for Mr. Dent, contractor of Nelson. Since being taken prisoner he has appeared on official lists has having been awarded the Military Medal. See Preston Guardian of 10 August 1918 for a similar report.
