Hardman was a native of Waterfoot, Lancashire.
The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As the N. C. O., in charge of the battery lorry he performed particularly good work for two months, and never failed to appear at the battery even under the most adverse circumstances, when it was in an advanced position, and under constant shell fire. He set a fine example of courage and determination to carry out his task in spite of the most trying circumstances".
