The Burnley Express of 26 May 1917 reported, 56790 Gunner Hubert Hitchon of 194 Coal Clough Lane, Burnley, Lancashire has been awarded the Military Medal.

The award was made for "gallantry and devotion to duty near St. Eloi whilst under heavy hostile fire, he with great coolness and example kept his gun in action."
