Hodson was a native of Nelson, Lancashire.

Served originally in the 1/5th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment (Regimental number 1594), seeing action in Egypt and Gallipoli before serving in the Machine Gun Corps in France and Belgium during 1917/18.
