Awarded the Russian Medal of St. George 3rd Class in the London Gazette of 25 August 1915.

Holmes was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.

The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads: - "For conspicuous gallantry in assisting to serve a single gun, until all but one of the sub-section had been killed or wounded". Promoted 2/Lieutenant on the 8 January 1918 and Lieutenant on the 4 February 1918.
