Awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 13 March 1918.

Holmes was a native of Troutbeck, Westmoreland but living at Barrow in Furness, Lancashire at the outbreak of war on the 4 August 1914. His connection with Nelson is unclear although it appears he had a sister living there in 1918.

Military Medal won when serving with the 11th battalion.

Killed in action 23 March 1918. Aged 24, he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
