Hughes was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.

The Burnley Express of 30 June 1917 reported, "for gallant conduct on Vimy Ridge."

Hughes was killed in action on the 29 July 1917 and is buried in the Dickebusch New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
