Joll was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.
The Burnley Express of 24 November 1917 reported, GALLANT CONDUCT. CORPORAL JACK JOLL. Mrs. Joll, who resides at 53, Curzon Street, Burnley, has been notified that her husband, Corporal Jack Joll, 7780, Lancashire Fusiliers has been awarded the Military Medal and Certificate. He enlisted at the outbreak of war and has been on active service for two years and three months. His brother, Sergeant William Joll, East Lancashire Regiment was killed over twelve months ago. A brother in law, Private F. Cunningham, Machine Gun Corps, who has been twice wounded is serving again. Major-General Bainbridge wrote to Corporal Joll, "I have read with great pleasure the reports of your battalion and brigade commanders of your gallant conduct and devotion to duty on 31 July 1917".
Awarded the bar to his Military Medal for gallantry at Kemmell Village on the night of 26/27 April 1918, (see page 345 and 346 of the Regimental history of the Lancashire Fusiliers 1914-1918, by Major General J.C. Latter, CBE, MC.).
