Kent was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.
The Burnley The Burnley Express of 3 May 1919 reported, EIGHT HEROES RECEIVE THEIR MEDALS, amongst whom was 59063 Corporal J. E. Kent of the 1/4th Battalion, Liverpool Regiment. Kent gained his medal and stripe for, "a smart peice of work when sent out with a party of 18 men to draw fire from the enemy. Ten men were knocked out but the remaining eight men under L/Corporal Kent took shelter in a village and held out for two days and a night until
the battalion came up. When they did arrive the party were put under supervision as they were thought to be Germans attired in British uniforms".
