The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry during a bomb attack on the enemy trenches. The party came under machine gun fire in the open, and, though three men were killed, he remained, throwing his bombs until called in. He has also rescued wounded men under fire".
