16th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
Awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 14 May 1919 (Peace Gazette No. 62).
From the Burnley Express of 10 December 1919,
58293 Private F. M. Laycock, of 7, Hawthorne Road, Burnley has been awarded the Military Medal. During an attack on the Hindenburg Line his platoon became detached from the rest of his company, and was eventually surrounded in an orchard by the enemy. Later on, he went, single handed, and bombed the enemy machine gun post in the face of heavy fire, thus making an opening for the escape of the remainder of his platoon, which joined their company the following morning. His gallantry and promptitude of action undoubtedly saved the lives of many. Lance-Corporal Laycock was in the Town Clerk's Office before enlistment, and is now with Messrs. Holmes, Holmes and Wrigley Solicitors.
