Awarded the Military Cross in the London Gazette of 26th July 1918.

Laycock was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.

The citation for his Military Cross reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was the senior officer of his battalion in the front line, in command of the centre platoon. He kept the line intact, although for three hours his flanks were enfiladed. During the withdrawal he covered the retirement of the wounded and M.O's staff, by taking up a position with two Lewis guns in front of the aid post." Awarded for the action between Ablainzville and Moyenville on the 27th March 1918.
