Leaver was a native of Worsthorne, Lancashire.
The Burnley Express reported, WORSTHORNE OFFICER IN TIGHT PLACE. Lieutenant Harry Grey Leaver, of the Lancashire Fusiliers and son of Mr. J. S. Leaver the postmaster of Worsthorne and Mrs. Leaver, has been awarded the Military Cross. The official note reads as follows, " For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in leading his company and driving the enemy back to the right flank. By the promptness and dash of the counter attack a critical situation was relieved and the flank secured. Later, he again showed great courage with his company, under intense shell fire, in holding an important part of the new line." Lieutenant Leaver who has been at the front over two years, has been wounded twice. He won a scholarship to Burnley Grammer School, he went on to Manchester University where he was in the OTC.
