Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the London Gazette of 28 March 1918.

Leyland was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.

The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the battery, the wireless aerial was broken on three occasions. On each occasion this man pluckily went out and repaired it, though the shelling was most severe. The disregard of personal danger and devotion to duty displayed by him enabled the battery to be fought, and greatly aided in steadying the other wireless operators and signalers under very trying conditions."
