Maguire was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.

The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal. published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry, after all his officers had become casualties, he led the men of his company under very heavy fire, and maintained his position near the enemy trenches. On other occasions he has shown great bravery and devotion to duty."

Killed in action 8 March 1916.
