The Burnley Express of 28 March 1917 reported, TWO BRIERFIELD SERGEANTS KILLED. A well know Roman Catholic youth of whom official news of death has been received, is Grenade Sergeant Herbert Manley, of 2, Wesley Street, Brierfield. Sergeant Manley enlisted during the first month of the war, August, 1914, at the age of 20 years. He was trained at Aldershot and on Salisbury Plain, and went out with the Dardanelles Expeditionary Force in June, 1915. On one occasion he was one of four left of a large number after an encounter with the Turks, and was in the last brigade to leave at the evacuation. They were landed on a Greek Island, and then shipped to another front, where he was wounded but recovered. He was quite well when he wrote home his last letter. The sad news was received at the weekend that he had been killed on the 9 March. Previous to his enlistment he was a sergeant in the Brierfield Holy Trinity Boy's Brigade. A brother, L/Corporal John Manley, is in a Liverpool Hospital suffering from wounds received in action in France. This youth enlisted, aged 16, in September, 1914 and has seen much action.
