The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry in voluntarily bringing up ammunition under heavy shell fire, and in voluntarily leaving his dug-out on two occasions, during a heavy bombardment, to dig out men who had been buried. He set a fine example of courage."
