Mason was a native of Padiham, Lancashire.

The citation for the D.C.M. published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry in volunteering to bring water and driving his cart into Ypres three times a day along shell swept roads. By his devotion to duty he supplied troops and wounded with much needed water".
