MacAuley was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.

The Burnley Express of 16 March 1918 reported, DEAD HERO'S MEDAL. ANOTHER RECOMMENDATION FOR BRAVERY. On October 27th, last, was recorded the fact that Private John Morrison Macauley, whos mother lives on Devonshire Road, Burnley, was killed in action on the 12th of that month. A year before we announced that he had been awarded the Military Medal. This has been received this week by Mrs. Macauley, from the headquarters of his regiment the 8th Royal Highlanders (Black Watch). The medal just received was awarded for bravery during the Somme operations of 1916; but since the death of the young hero, another recommendeation for bravery has been received in the form of a certificate of commendation, relating to his work on April 9th last year.

Private Macauley, a son of an old Union Star football player, was 22 years of age. He enlisted into the Black Watch in May 1915, and went out on October 2nd, 1915.

Killed in action on the 12 October 1917.
