Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the London Gazette of 3 September 1918, ('C' Battery, 152 Brigade RFA).

Awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 19 November 1917, ('A' Battery, 177th Brigade, RFA).

Miles was a native of Nelson, Lancashire. The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at the gun position during an enemy bombardment. He supervised the supply of ammunition and got waggon teams away under heavy shell fire. Later, he accompanied an officer, and assisted to observe until the officer was killed, when he was ordered to bring the party in. Throughout he showed great courage and determination."
