Nuttall was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.
He was born at 15, Hufling Lane, Burnley circa August 1897, the son of Edgar and Florence Mary Nuttall and was baptized on the 1 September
1897 at St. Stephen's Parish Church, Burnley.
Nuttall enlisted on the 29 February 1916 whilst living at 23, Heath Street, Burnley, Lancashire, he was aged 18 years and 9 months and employed as a shop assistant.
He was discharged "no longer physically fit for service", on the 23 December 1918. He was 21 years and 7 months of age at the time of his discharge.
During his service he had been wounded by gun shots on two occasions, a slight wound to his left arm on the 17 August 1917 and secondly a severe wound to his left thigh on the 4 April 1918.
Served in France and Belgium from the 25 November 1916 until the 7 June 1918.
On the 24 September 1929 he married Gladys Spencer (25) at St. Andrew's Parish Church, Burnley.
In addition to his Military Medal he was entitled to the British War and Victory Medals.
