Overton was a native of Nelson, Lancashire.

The citation for the D.C.M. published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He went out under the most intense fire and succeeded in rescuing a wounded man. He has at all times set a splendid example".

Commissioned as 2/Lieutenant into the Manchester Regiment on the 30 April 1918.
