Awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 23 February 1918.

Pickup was a native of Nelson, Lancashire.

The The Burnley Express of 23 April 1919, the Burnley News of 26 April 1919 reported, NELSON BOMBARDIER PRESENTED WITH MILITARY MEDAL. A similar article in the Nelson Leader of 26 April 1919 reported ANOTHER NELSON MILITARY MEDALIST. The text in all read, At Nelson Police Court on Saturday, the Military Medal was presented to Bombardier Thomas Pickup of the R.F.A., of 259, Leeds Road, Nelson. The medal has been awarded to him for, "laying telephone wires whilst under observation and heavy shell fire on the 25 October 1917."

In making the presentation, the Mayor (Ald. J. Rickard) said he was sure that the winning of the medal had meant hardship to Pickup. It also showed devotion to duty, and that it showed he had considered others before himself. He was sure it would be a pleasant reminder in the days to come, that he had done his duty in the defence of mankind and his country.

The London Gazette and other announcements showed he was from Foulridge, Lancashire.
