Renshaw was a native of Nelson, Lancashire.

The Colne and Nelson Times reported, Military Medal for Another Nelson Soldier. Mr. and Mrs. Renshaw, of 11, Wilkinson Street, Nelson, have received information from their son, Private J. T. Renshaw, of the East Lancashire Regiment, who is now serving in France, that he has won the Military Medal for bravery in the field when carrying a wounded comrade to safety. Private Renshaw, who was in the army before the war, has been previously wounded and gassed in May 1915.
