The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. His resource, energy and courage have been proved on many critical occasions, notably when he has been in charge of forward report centres. In order to encourage his linesmen, he has on many occasions gone out with them to repair wires under the most violent shell fire".
