11th (Light) Battalion, Tank Corps.
Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the London Gazette of 1 January 1919.
Sandford was a native of Barrowford, Lancashire.
Formerly 17036, Royal Field Artillery.
The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 26th August 1918, in fighting around Monchy Le Preux. He had driven his Tank continuously for over nine hours over difficult country at night. When his Tank became ditched he made tremendous efforts to get the Tank out though subjected to heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. Finally, when the effort was abandoned, though in a fainting condition, he volunteered and took a message from the line to battalion headquarters under heavy machine-gun fire and by so doing helped to clear up the situation which was of the greatest value."
