The Burnley News of 2 February 1918 reported, PADIHAM CORPORAL. One of Four Brothers Receives Military Medal. Corporal Fred Smellie, Padiham (East Lancashire Regiment), was on Tuesday, at Fulwood Barracks, ceremonially presented with the Military Medal, which had been awarded for his gallantry in the field. His brother John, is fighting in Palestine, another brother, Harry was wounded at Loos, another brother, Alexander was discharged from the Army after campaigns in Gallipoli and in France, in each of which he was wounded. They are the sons of Mrs. Smellie of Lancaster Road, Preston.
