Awarded the Military Cross in the London Gazette of 8 March 1919.

The citation was published in October 1919 and reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At Marou, on the 23 October, 1918, he was in the advanced regimental aid post. It was reported that a man was laying wounded some distance from the aid post. Under heavy shell fire he with a stretcher bearer rushed out and carried this man in. His conduct throughout the operations was admirable".

Smith was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.
