9970 Private Henry Smith, MM.

2nd Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Awarded the M.M., in the London Gazette of 28 September 1917. Awarded a bar to his M.M., in the London Gazette of 10 January 1920. Smith was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.

The Northern Daily Telegraph of 12 November 1917 reported:-


Another Burnley miner to win distinction on the battlefield is Private Henry Smith, East Lancashire Regiment, who has won the Military Medal. "As a stretcher bearer he carried wounded men over open ground exposed to heavy enemy machine-gun fire." Private Smith is a single man, 28 years of age, and his home is at 27, Richard Street, Burnley. Before enlisting in 1908 he was identified with St. Mary's Catholic Church.

"Soldiers Died in the Great War" shows:-Killed in action on the 24 April 1918. Born at Preston, Lancashire, enlisted at Burnley, Lancashire.
