Snowden was a native of Padiham, Lancashire.

From the Burnley Express of the 10 August 1918, Padiham Man's Gallant Act. Mr. and Mrs. Snowden of 32, Hill Street, Padiham, have got a letter from their son, Private Fredrick Snowden, 27148, East Lancashire Regiment, in which he states he has been awarded the Military medal. The reason officially given for the award are as follows, "On the 27 July 1918, in the sector during heavy shelling, an enemy shell blew up the bomb store near No. 4 Co. Private Snowden was detailed to collect the boxes of bombs which had been blown from the parapet. He noticed in one box, the lid of which had been blown open, that there was a bomb actuating. He immediately pulled the bomb out of its recess in the box and threw it over the parapet. The bomb exploded before it reached the ground. This prompt action of private Snowden, undoubtedly saved the life of his company officer and several men who were standing near." Private Snowden was brought up at St. Matthew's day and Sunday Schools, Padiham.
