Awarded the Military Cross in the London Gazette of 18 July 1917.

The citation for his Military Cross reads, ”For conspicuous gallantry in lengthy operations when he led two companies in an attack and organised the consolidation of the positions gained. Later, although wounded in a further advance, he remained at his post until relieved. His fine example throughout was an inspiration to his men”.

Initially served as 11378 Private, Coldstream Guards. Served in France from 24 February 1915 until commissioned on the 7 May 1916.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Speak of Belverdere, Nelson, Lancashire.
