Stephenson was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.
The Burnley Express of 10 September 1919 reported, ACCOUNTED FOR GERMAN MACHINE GUN. The Military Medal has been awarded to Mr. Ben Stephenson, 7, Ennismore street, Burnley, formerly 65284 Private, 4th Royal Fusiliers. He won the decoration for gallant work on the 27 September 1918. Whilst his battalion was going over the top, a German machine gun was causing considerable mischief. Private Stephenson who was a Lewis gunner, put the weapon out of action, and enabled our men to advance. Mr. Stephenson who is a mechanic at Thornber's Daneshouse Mill, saw two years service in France, and was wounded three times.
