Sunderland was a native of Nelson, Lancashire.

The citation for Sunderland's Military Medal published in "The Tank Corps, Honours and Awards 1914 -1918" reads, "This private showed splendid bravery and devotion to duty whilst in action at Joncourt on October 1st, 1918, under heavy armour piercing machine gun fire, which came through the sponson. He carried on firing until severely wounded in the arm, putting out several machine guns."
