Taylor was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.

The citation, published in the London Gazette of 6 April 1918 reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in remaining in command of his company although wounded early in the action. He only withdrew when he was no longer fit for duty, and after arranging a counter attack."
