Taylor was a native of Burnley, Lancashire. At the outbreak of war Taylor's family were resident in Manchester, Lancashire.
Killed in action 4 November 1914. Buried in Tanga Memorial Cemetery, Tanzania. The register records he was aged 25 and the husband of Mrs. E. Taylor of 44, Firhill Road, Glasgow, Scotland.
This is a rare East African award, awarded posthumously.
The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For gallant conduct on 4 November, 1914, during the attack on Tanga (East Africa), and for general good work performed under a heavy fire".
